Kestrels are on of the smallest birds in the raptor family and Raptors are my favorite with parrots being a close second as far as birds are concerned. This particular bird as you can tell by the colouring of the feathers, is a juvenile. So much has changed since I first painted a bird as a subject, so the results are encouraging. Its a good representation of where I am as a painter; I've learned how to fly and now it's time to show it. The sky behind the bird has been done extra smooth and this allows for light to bounce back with depth and vibrancy. I'm all for impasto but after so many works of having it as a dominant characteristic, it's nice to change things up.
